Full Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

8 km | 4–5 hrs | Rainforest
Elevation: 1,860 m → 2,700 m
Altitude Gained: 840 m

The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to the Marangu Gate, where permits are issued and park officials welcome you to Kilimanjaro National Park. After introductions and briefings, the trek starts through dense rainforest.

The trail winds along moss-covered trees and small streams, offering a gentle introduction to hiking at altitude. Your guide points out unique plant species and local wildlife. After a few hours of steady ascent, you reach Mandara Hut, a well-positioned camp nestled in the forest. Afternoon rest and a warm dinner prepare you for the climb ahead.

5.3 km | 4–5 hrs | Moorland
Elevation: 3,021 m → 3,839 m
Altitude Gained: 818 m

After breakfast, the trail continues upward as the rainforest gradually fades behind you. The vegetation becomes shorter and hardier, marking the transition into the moorland zone. The route follows rocky ridges and open valleys, offering increasingly wide views of the mountain.

As you approach the Shira Plateau, the temperature drops and the landscape opens dramatically. On clear days, Kibo Peak dominates the horizon. Shira Camp is set on an expansive volcanic plateau, providing a sense of space and altitude that signals the true beginning of high-mountain trekking.

5–6 km | 2–4 hrs | Moorland/Alpine Desert
Elevation: 3,720 m → 3,960 m
Altitude Gained: 240 m

This day is dedicated to acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to higher altitudes before the summit push. You may hike to nearby points such as Zebra Rocks or Little Mawenzi for spectacular panoramic views.

Return to Horombo Hut for lunch, rest, and dinner. Proper hydration and nutrition are emphasized to prepare for the challenging summit night.

11 km | 5–6 hrs | Alpine Desert
Elevation: 3,720 m → 4,700 m
Altitude Gained: 980 m

Today’s trek moves into the harsh and barren alpine desert zone. Vegetation thins, and the landscape becomes stark, with dramatic views of glaciers and Kibo Peak ahead.

The trail steadily climbs toward Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt. The evening is an early night to rest before the midnight ascent. Temperatures drop significantly, making warm clothing and gear essential.

Summit Ascent: 6 km | 6–8 hrs
Descent: 15 km | 6–8 hrs
Elevation: 4,700 m → 5,895 m (Summit)
Altitude Gained: 1,195 m
Descent To: 3,720 m

The summit attempt begins around midnight. Trekking slowly and steadily, you ascend through loose scree and volcanic ash toward Stella Point, reaching it as the sun rises a breathtaking and emotional experience.

From Stella Point, a short final climb leads to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After photos and celebration, you descend back to Horombo Hut, stopping briefly at Kibo Hut for rest and refreshments.

12 km | 4–5 hrs | Rainforest
Elevation: 3,720 m → 1,860 m
Altitude Lost: 1,860 m

The final descent is long but scenic, passing through alpine desert, moorland, and finally rainforest. At Marangu Gate, you receive your summit certificates and thank your mountain crew for their support. A vehicle transfer returns you to Moshi for a hot shower, celebratory meal, and reflections on your achievement.
